The NHS has significant staffing shortages. Nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and radiographers are in persistent high demand. HCPC and NMC registration are prerequisites for clinical roles.
London is one of the two largest financial centres in the world. Investment banking, fintech, insurance and accounting all have strong graduate hiring pipelines. Most major financial employers hold sponsor licences.
Civil, mechanical, structural and electrical engineering all have graduate shortages in the UK. Chartered Engineer status significantly increases earning potential and sponsorship prospects.
UK universities are large employers of international graduates at postdoctoral level. Teaching in schools requires QTS, which can be pursued through Assessment Only if you have relevant experience.
International law graduates can qualify as solicitors through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination. Large law firms actively sponsor. International arbitration and commercial law have the most opportunities.
How to maximise your career prospects as an international graduate
Most large UK employers close graduate scheme applications between October and January. If you wait until after graduation you have missed an entire cycle of opportunities.
The minimum for Skilled Worker sponsorship in 2025 is £26,200 or the going rate, whichever is higher. Technology, finance and healthcare roles pay well above this.
Check the Home Office register of licensed sponsors on gov.uk before spending time on any application. Applying to unlicensed employers is wasted time.
Attend employer events and career fairs at your university. Most jobs at smaller companies are filled through referrals. Build your network while you have access to campus infrastructure.
Most students target the same large employers. SMEs often have less competition and genuine skills shortages. Many hold sponsor licences but are rarely targeted by international candidates.
