One-to-One Career Counselling for UK Students - Online, Personalised, and Built Around Your Situation

Most university careers services deal with CVs, job fairs, and general advice. They don't cover HCPC registration, NMC registration, PhD proposal writing, Chevening scholarship applications, or career planning for international students trying to navigate the UK job market. That is what we specialise in.

Every session is one-to-one with the same counsellor throughout. They read your background before the call. They know your situation by the second session. The advice is built around your course, your level, and where you are actually trying to get to - not a general framework applied to everyone.

We work with undergraduate students, postgraduate students, PhD applicants, international students in the UK, and healthcare graduates going through HCPC or NMC registration. The first session is free and there is no payment required to book it.

Our Services

Career Counselling Services for UK Students - The Full List

From choosing the right modules in your first year to HCPC registration after graduation - this is what we deal with every day.

Career Direction After Your Degree
Finished and not sure which way to go? We look at what you've studied, what you've actually enjoyed, and what jobs are realistic from where you are - and work out concrete options from there.
PhD Programme Support
Research proposals, supervisor matching, funding applications. We focus on the parts that cause rejections - the research gap, the funder match, the supervisor alignment - rather than a general read-through. We also run mock viva prep for enrolled students.
Fully Funded Scholarship Applications
Chevening, Commonwealth, GREAT, and university-specific awards. Before you spend weeks on essays, we check whether you actually qualify - most students don't do this and find out too late.
HCPC Registration Support
Most delays and rejections come down to one or two missing or incorrectly formatted documents - not the applicant's qualifications. We go through your full application before you hit submit.
Learn More
NMC Registration & Nursing Career Support
Support for nursing and midwifery graduates navigating NMC registration, revalidation requirements, and working out which NHS roles fit where you are in your career right now.
Learn More
Skills & Employability Gaps
We look at where you are now against what UK employers in your sector actually need to see. If there's a gap, we build a plan around it before you start applying rather than working it out after a run of rejections.
Academic Guidance & Study Planning
Choosing modules, deciding whether a particular Masters is worth the cost, managing a heavy workload - we give you an honest answer based on your situation rather than a general overview.
CV, LinkedIn & Interview Preparation
We rewrite your CV around the specific roles you're going for, with the language and structure those employers actually respond to. LinkedIn and mock interview sessions available alongside if needed.
International Student Support
Studying in the UK as an international student brings specific challenges - visa considerations, getting employers to recognise overseas qualifications, Graduate Route eligibility, sponsorship. We cover all of these in sessions.
Regulated & Professional Course Guidance
Thinking about a GDC, GPhC, or GMC-regulated career? We go through what the training pathway looks like in practice - costs, timelines, competition for places, and the points where students typically run into problems.
Job Search & UK Placement Support
CV, applications, recruiter outreach, offer negotiation. We cover the whole process. Especially relevant if you've been sending applications for months with no responses - that usually has a fixable cause.
Why Tutorment

Why Students Choose The Tutorment for Career Counselling

What makes our one-to-one career counselling different from a university careers office or a generic careers coach.

Advice That Fits Your Situation
We look at your course, your grades, and where you want to end up before recommending anything. Students with a 2:2 in Social Sciences need different advice from students finishing a Masters in Physiotherapy - we don't treat them the same.
We Know the UK System in Detail
47 UK career pathways covered - healthcare, law, academia, and regulated professions that most university careers offices don't deal with. That includes routes most students only find out about after they've already made the wrong choice.
Real PhD and Scholarship Results
We've had students shortlisted for Chevening and accepted into funded PhD programmes after being rejected on their own attempts. The preparation for these applications is specific - we've worked through enough of them to know where things go wrong.
Counsellors Who've Done It Themselves
Every advisor holds a PhD, Masters, or Level 4 counselling qualification and has at least two years of hands-on experience in UK career guidance or academic admissions. They've gone through the processes they advise on.
What You Share Stays Private
Your application history, course struggles, career doubts - none of it leaves the session. We've had students tell us things they hadn't shared with their own families. We take that seriously and keep it that way.
HCPC, NMC & Regulated Profession Specialists
Registration requirements for health professions change regularly. We keep up with current HCPC and NMC processes so students aren't working from outdated forum posts or guidance that no longer reflects what's actually required.
The Process

How Our Career Counselling Sessions Work

Four steps from first contact to the outcome you came for - whether that's a career plan, a PhD place, or HCPC registration.

01
We Find Out What's Actually Going On
Your academic level, your situation, your goals - and the specific thing blocking you right now. We ask questions rather than making assumptions about what you need.
02
We Build a Plan That Fits You
A clear plan based on your course, your situation, and what's realistic - covering what to do first, in what order, and why.
03
Ongoing Sessions With the Same Counsellor
Regular one-to-one check-ins with someone who already knows your situation. Each session picks up from where the last one finished.
04
You Get the Outcome You Came For
CV done, application submitted, registration approved, PhD place confirmed - whichever it is. We stay involved through to the end rather than stopping once the plan is in place.
Student Reviews

What Students Say After Working With Us

Feedback from students who came to us stuck and left knowing what to do next.

★★★★★
"Finished my BSc Psychology with no idea whether to do a Masters or just start applying for jobs. Two sessions with Tutorment and it clicked into place. They'd actually read my dissertation topic and the modules I'd taken before the call - wasn't just generic Masters vs work advice."
Priya M.
University of Birmingham, Psychology
★★★★★
"HCPC rejected my first application over supporting evidence formatting. Found Tutorment, went through everything with them properly, resubmitted. Passed second time. Should've done it this way from the start - would've saved me about three months."
Adebayo K.
Physiotherapy Graduate, London
★★★★★
"I was sceptical about paying for career advice. The session was nothing like I'd expected though - they focused on my OT degree and wanting to move into mental health specifically, and laid out actual steps rather than a list of things to consider."
Fatimah R.
MSc Occupational Therapy, Manchester
★★★★★
"Two failed Chevening attempts on my own. Tutorment went through the leadership essay with me from scratch and did a full practice interview. Got shortlisted this time. Whether it goes further or not, the application itself was much stronger than anything I'd submitted before."
James O.
LLM International Law, Sheffield
★★★★★
"My PhD proposal kept getting rejected and I couldn't work out why. In the first session they spotted it - the research gap section wasn't doing its job. We spent the whole session on that part specifically. Got accepted at Nottingham on my next application."
Meera S.
PhD Education Studies, Nottingham
★★★★★
"Came from Nigeria and had no read on what UK employers actually look for. The CV Tutorment helped me put together looked completely different from what I'd had. Two interviews in the three weeks after I started sending it out."
Chidi N.
MSc Finance, University of Leeds
★★★★★
"Went back into nursing at 34, had no clue about NMC registration timelines or what counted as valid evidence of practice. The advisor walked through all of it in plain language. Felt like talking to someone who'd actually done the registration themselves rather than just read the guidance."
Sharon T.
Adult Nursing, University of Surrey
★★★★★
"Booked specifically to find out which HCPC speech therapy programmes actually lead to NHS jobs. Got a much more specific answer than I expected - things my uni careers office had never brought up, including which placement types carry weight on a CV."
Ling W.
BSc Speech & Language Therapy, Cardiff
★★★★★
"Did a one-off session to check my PhD funding application. They pointed out straight away that I hadn't tied my research aims to what the funder was actually trying to fund. Easy to miss, but it would have cost me the whole application."
Rohan P.
PhD Biomedical Sciences, King's College London

What You Actually Get

What You Actually Get When You Work With Us

The Same Counsellor Every Session

You work with one person throughout. They already know your situation from the previous session, so time isn't spent recapping - it goes into the work.

Guidance That Fits Your Level and Course

A first-year undergrad needs different advice from a postgrad returning to study at 35. We don't use the same plan for both - the situation is different enough that the advice should be too.

Academic and Career Support in One Place

University careers offices tend to cover job applications and little beyond that. We deal with study choices, post-grad decisions, registration requirements, and job searching - one counsellor across all of it.

PhD and Scholarship Applications That Actually Land

Chevening and funded PhD applications have specific failure points that most applicants don't know about until they've already been rejected. We know what panels look for and what causes strong candidates to fall short.

Interview Prep Focused on Where You Lose Marks

We identify which question types are costing you in interviews and practise those specifically. Not a run-through of standard questions - targeted work on the areas that are actually the problem.

No Upsell at the End of the Call.
The free first session is there so you can decide whether it's worth continuing. If it isn't, we'd rather tell you that than have you pay for something that won't help.

PhD Support - From Your First Idea to a Funded Place

Most PhD rejections come down to the proposal or the funding application, not the student's ability. Those are the two areas we focus on.

We support applications to UK universities across all disciplines. UKRI funding, Research Council studentships, departmental awards, and self-funded routes.

Research Topic & Proposal Writing
The hardest part for most applicants is identifying the research gap - what hasn't been done, not just what interests you. We help you locate it, frame it clearly, and build a proposal that reviewers can follow without gaps in the argument.
Supervisor & University Selection
The supervisor you choose has more impact on your PhD than the university ranking. We help you find supervisors who are actively publishing in your area and show you how to make contact in a way that gets a response.
Funding & Studentship Applications
UKRI, Research Councils, departmental studentships - each has different eligibility criteria and different priorities. We identify which ones you can realistically go for and help you build applications around what each funder is looking for.
Personal Statement for PhD Applications
A PhD personal statement needs to demonstrate research readiness, not just academic results. Most people write it like an undergraduate statement. We redirect the focus before you spend weeks on a version that won't serve the purpose.
PhD Interview Preparation
PhD interviews tend to test your proposal, your methodology awareness, and how well your work fits the supervisor's research agenda. We practise on those areas rather than running general interview coaching.
Support for Students Already Enrolled
Struggling with progress, a difficult supervisor situation, or the viva coming up? We work with students who are already in a PhD programme, not only those trying to get into one.
Fully Funded Scholarships

Fully Funded Scholarship Support

Most scholarship applications fail for one of two reasons: the student applied to something they didn't actually qualify for, or the essays didn't address what the selection panel was scoring. We deal with both.

We support Chevening scholarship applications, Commonwealth scholarship applications, GREAT scholarship applications, and university-specific funded awards for UK and international students.

Chevening Scholarship
The leadership essay is where most Chevening applications are decided. We work through your actual leadership background and help you frame it in a way that connects to what Chevening selectors are specifically looking for.
Commonwealth Scholarship
CSFP eligibility varies by country and field. A lot of students apply without checking whether they actually qualify. We verify that first, and only move to the application itself once it's confirmed.
University & Department Awards
A lot of university scholarships are poorly advertised and have internal deadlines most students miss. We check what's available for your course and institution before those windows close.
Essays & Personal Statements
Scholarship essays need to answer why you, why this programme, and why now - specifically in relation to what the funder is trying to achieve. We work through that argument with you based on your actual background.
Scholarship Interview Coaching
Selection panel interviews are different from standard job or university interviews. They test how well you understand the scholarship's purpose and whether your goals line up with it. We prepare you specifically for that format.
Finding the Right Funding First
We check what you actually qualify for before you start writing - based on nationality, subject area, career stage, and institution. It saves students a lot of time spent on applications that were never going to work.
Professional Registration

HCPC, NMC & Professional Registration Support

Applications get rejected or held up for specific, avoidable reasons. We go through yours before submission so problems turn up before they cost you time, not after.

We support physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, nursing, midwifery, psychology, and all other HCPC and NMC regulated professions.

HCPC Registration Application Support
We go through your full HCPC application - forms, supporting documents, evidence of practice, character references. The most common reason applications stall is incomplete or incorrectly formatted evidence. We look for those issues before you submit.
NMC Registration & Career Counselling
For overseas nurses, NMC registration involves additional steps that the official guidance doesn't always spell out clearly. We explain what the CBT and OSCE actually require and what counts as valid evidence of practice toward revalidation.
HCPC Course & University Selection
Not every healthcare degree leads to HCPC registration, and not every approved programme is equal for placement quality or NHS employability. We go through the options with you before you apply rather than after enrolment.
GPhC, GDC, GMC & Other Regulated Bodies
Pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, social work, QTS - if your profession is regulated in the UK, the registration process has requirements most universities don't fully explain. We go through what's actually needed so you're not piecing it together from the official guidance on your own.

The Specific Situations We Deal With Most Often

The most common reasons students come to us. If yours is on this list, we've dealt with something similar before.

Career Change & Transition
Your degree or current role isn't what you expected. We look at what's transferable, which routes are realistic from where you are now, and whether further training is necessary - or whether there's a shorter path you haven't considered.
Stuck and Not Progressing
Doing the work but not moving up. We look at what's actually blocking progression - whether it's a missing qualification, how you're coming across in applications, or something specific that's been missed.
Dissertation & Research Writing
Structure, referencing, making the methodology section coherent - these are what most students actually struggle with, not the writing itself. We work through the specific sections causing problems rather than giving you a checklist.
CV Getting No Responses
Months of applications with nothing back is either a CV problem or a targeting problem. We work out which one it is first, then focus on the right thing - not both at once on the assumption something will stick.
Getting Interviews but Not Offers
That's a different problem from not getting interviews in the first place, and it needs different preparation. We run targeted mock sessions on the question types you're losing marks on, not a general run-through of common questions.
Masters or PhD - Is It Actually Worth It?
We give you an honest view of whether further study makes financial and career sense for your situation - including when the answer is probably no.
First Session is Free

Not Sure Where to Start? Book a Free 30-Minute Career Counselling Session.

Most students who contact us don't have everything figured out - just a sense that something isn't working. In the free first session we go through your situation and tell you honestly what we think would help. Our one-to-one career counselling for UK students has helped over 300 people move forward from exactly that point.

About Our Counsellors

Qualified UK Career Counsellors With Direct Experience

Every counsellor at The Tutorment holds either a PhD, a Masters degree, or a Level 4 Diploma in Career Counselling. They have at least two years of hands-on experience in UK career guidance, academic admissions, health professional registration, or scholarship applications.

The people advising on HCPC registration have direct experience with that process. The counsellors supporting PhD applicants have been through doctoral admissions themselves. We do not use general career coaches for areas that require specific knowledge.

Founded by Vipul Jain, The Tutorment has supported over 300 students since it started - from undergraduates choosing their first career path to postdoctoral researchers making their next move.

FAQs

Career Counselling for UK Students - Common Questions Answered

Everything students ask before booking their free first session.

We're a career and academic guidance service for UK students, run by counsellors who hold PhDs, Masters degrees, or Level 4 qualifications and have direct experience in UK admissions, health registration, and scholarship applications. We work one-to-one with students from secondary school through to postdoc level. Sessions are online and the first one is free.
Yes. PhD applications tend to fail at specific points - the research gap isn't clearly identified, the supervisor choice doesn't align with the proposed research, or the funding application doesn't connect to what the funder prioritises. We work on those parts directly, not a general read-through of the full document.
Yes. We start by checking eligibility before anything else - students often spend months on Chevening or Commonwealth essays and only discover the eligibility problem at the end. Once confirmed, we work through the essays and interview prep. We've had students reach the Chevening shortlist after multiple failed solo attempts.
Yes - it comes up constantly. Most rejections are documentation issues: missing evidence, wrong format, sections that weren't completed correctly. We go through the whole application before you submit and check it against current requirements. We also help students who are still choosing an HCPC-approved course and want to understand what the registration pathway looks like before committing.
Mostly students who are either unsure which direction to take, stuck on a specific application, or dealing with something their university careers office doesn't cover - HCPC registration, a PhD proposal, or a scholarship essay. If you're studying in the UK at any level from secondary school to postdoc, book the free session and we'll tell you in the first 20 minutes whether we can actually help.
Every counsellor holds a PhD, Masters, or Level 4 diploma in career counselling with at least two years of hands-on experience in UK career guidance or academic admissions. The people advising on HCPC registration have direct experience with that process. Same with PhD support and scholarship applications. We don't use general-purpose career coaches for specialist areas.
Yes, all sessions are online - video call or WhatsApp. We work with students across the UK and internationally. Book through the form on this page or message us on WhatsApp with a brief description of your situation, and we'll come back within 24 hours to confirm a slot.
The first session is free with no payment details required. If you continue, most ongoing counselling plans run at around £150 per month. PhD and scholarship packages are priced individually depending on what's involved. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll send a full cost breakdown before anything starts.
Fill in the form on this page or message us on WhatsApp. Briefly explain what you're dealing with - your course, level, and what you're trying to sort out - and we'll come back within 24 hours to book your free first session. You don't need to have a clear question ready before you get in touch.
Yes. What you share in sessions stays between you and your counsellor. We don't pass anything to your university, employer, or anyone else. Students regularly tell us things they haven't shared with their families - failed applications, difficult supervisor situations, serious doubts about their path. We treat that accordingly.
Yes. International students face specific challenges that domestic students don't - Graduate Route visa eligibility, getting UK employers to recognise overseas qualifications, understanding sponsorship routes, and knowing which industries are realistic without settled status. We deal with all of these in sessions and have worked with students from over 30 countries studying in the UK.
Yes - this is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer depends on your specific course, the sector you're going into, and whether a Masters will actually move you forward or just delay the start of your career by a year. We give you a straight answer based on your situation, including when the answer is probably that a Masters isn't worth it for where you want to go.
University careers offices are generalist services covering CV checks, job fairs, and broad career advice. They don't typically cover HCPC or NMC registration, PhD proposal writing, funded scholarship applications, or anything specific to regulated professions. We cover all of those and work one-to-one with the same counsellor throughout rather than seeing whoever is available that day.
